The reduction of the digital divide is a challenge for several institutions and public authorities.
During the last decade the commitment of local authorities towards the reduction of the digital
divide has increased. Local authorities have become the main actors for the promotion of
transnational partnership agreements in order to develop decentralized cooperation projects and to
raise funds for the realization of such projects.
The contribution of Turin in this field has been particularly important. The Province of Turin is
one of the founders of the DSF – Digital Solidarity Fund, created in Geneva in March 2005.
The Region of Piedmont, the Province of Turin and the City of Turin promote an international
meeting trough the Cooperation Agency for Local Authorities. TORINODIGITALWORLD aims at
discussing about cooperation, best practices and financial instruments for the reduction of the digital
divide.
The meeting is part of a worldwide framework of actions. The results of the Turin meeting will be
an important contribution for future appointments dealing with information society, scheduled at
the end of 2005 in Bilbao (Spain) and Tunis (Tunisia) in occasion of the World Summit on
information society.
“TOorinoDIGITALWORLD, Financing cooperation to bridge the digital divide” is an international
meeting that wants to support the activities of the DFS and to promote contacts with all the actors of
civil society.
